What to Expect During Your Pet's Dental Procedure

What to Expect During Your Pet's Dental Procedure

Your pet's dental health is just as important as your dental health. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to understand how to properly care for your pet's teeth to prevent future health issues. At Animal Clinic of Arlington, our veterinarian wants you to know what to expect during your pet’s dental procedure.

Preparing for Your Pet’s Dental Procedure

Our veterinarian will review your pet's medical history, take blood samples, conduct a physical, take x rays, review any existing dental issues to determine whether or not your pet is healthy enough to undergo a dental procedure. Our veterinarian will proceed to identify any dental issues and explain in detail what treatment will entail. We will also give you rules to follow the day before the procedure, including when to stop feeding your pet and if any medications will be required.

During a Pet Dental Procedure

Pets need to have anesthesia for dental procedures to prevent them from moving around. Anesthesia allows our veterinarian to safely look below the gumline for undetected issues, check the roots of the teeth, perform extractions if necessary, plus fully clean and polish your pet's teeth. Anesthesia also keeps your pet comfortable, reduces the stress, anxiety, and pain that your pet may experience during a dental procedure.

After Your Pet Dental Procedure

After your pet's dental procedure, our veterinary team will review what was performed and explain if any future procedures will be necessary. Your pet may experience some pain, inflammation, or discomfort following a dental procedure. It is also normal for pets to be groggy and tired after the procedure. A temporary soft diet may be recommended. Our veterinary team will also review the best ways to perform effective at-home dental care for your pet.
