Spay & Neuter

An important decision all pet owners have to make sooner, rather than later, is whether or not to spay or neuter their pets. Spay and neuter procedures sterilize pets so they cannot reproduce. If you live in Arlington or surrounding communities, bring your pet to Animal Clinic of Arlington for these surgeries. We’re here to help your pet live a healthier, happier life.

Importance of Spaying or Neutering Your Pet

As a pet owner, you have a responsibility to your local community. If you’re not planning to breed your pets, it only makes sense to have them fixed to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Unwanted litters are usually given to animal shelters, which are often overloaded with unwanted animals as it is. Spay and neuter procedures reduce the number of stray animals where you live.

When pets go into heat, they often exhibit undesirable behavior both at home and in the neighborhood where you live. Female cats may howl throughout the night or spray urine indoors. Male dogs may wander off throughout the neighborhood in search of a mate or become aggressive. This conduct will not only affect you, but your neighbors and their pets as well. By spaying or neutering your dog or cat, you spare everyone the trouble of putting up with such unpleasant behavior.

Health Benefits of Spay and Neuter Surgeries

Spay and neuter procedures reduce your pet’s risk of developing reproductive infections, cancers, and tumors that can seriously impair his or her health or lead to death. By fixing your pets, you increase their chances of living a longer, healthier life.

When to Spay or Neuter

Dogs and cats can be spayed or neutered as early as 8 weeks of age. On average, however, this procedure is done when pets are around 5-6 months old. After conducting a pet exam, our Arlington veterinarian can recommend the best time to spay or neuter your cat or dog. Females should be fixed before their first heat to get maximum health results from the procedure.

Spay and Neuter Surgery Aftercare

Spay and neuter procedures are considered routine surgery by our Arlington vet. Your pet will be sedated for the surgery and sent home afterwards for recovery.  Recovery times are generally between 10 to 14 days. We’ll provide you with homecare instructions and pain medication to keep your pets comfortable as they heal.
